Which garage surfaces the code actually governs

Not every surface in a garage is treated the same way. The wall shared with the house and the ceiling under any living space above it separate the garage from conditioned space, while the exterior walls and the door do not. None of the sources used here cover code requirements for garages, so treat what follows as use-case guidance rather than a statement of what an inspector will check.

Take a detached-front bedroom over a two-car garage. Home Depot says a garage with living space above it should reach at least R-14 to keep that space comfortable. No source here gives any figure for the exterior wall of that same garage.

That distinction decides where your money goes. If you insulate the exterior walls and leave the shared wall thin, you have skipped the surfaces that determine whether the room above stays comfortable. What follows gives the numbers the sources do give.

Nealon Insulation notes that rigid foam board needs a thermal barrier such as drywall over it wherever it adjoins living space. Wherever the foam adjoins living space, then, the insulation choice and the barrier are a single decision rather than two.

R-value is a measure of thermal resistance, and higher is better: R-16 outperforms R-12. Where that stops being true in practice is the interesting part.

The three numbers that set your target

Start with two questions. Whether the garage is attached to or shares a surface with the house, and whether the space will ever be heated. Those answers drive the target R-value in every recommendation set here; none of them names a climate zone or a code requirement. Everything else follows from them: material choice, panel thickness, tape adhesion.

The third question is the one that moves the number most, and it is where the two most-cited recommendation ladders stop agreeing.

Where do Garaga and Home Depot disagree?

On unheated garages, by about three points. Garaga, a garage door manufacturer, sets its floor at R-10 for the door of a garage attached to the house, and says R-10 or more is sufficient for a garage that parks a car in winter and stores things the rest of the year. Home Depot puts an attached but unheated garage at R-7 to R-9, on the grounds that heat loss there shows up on the home's heating bill. Nothing in either source confirms the two sets of numbers measure the same thing.

Heated garages split the same way. Garaga wants at least R-12 for a garage held at a thermostat setting of 46-50°F; Home Depot gives the heated range as R-10 to R-13. Detached and unheated is where the gap is widest. Home Depot says R-0 to R-6 is usually enough to improve climate control, while Garaga simply says a lightly insulated or non-insulated door will do.

Neither ladder is wrong. Garaga sells doors and reasons from door performance; Home Depot reasons from the heating bill of the attached house. Nothing in these pages confirms the two sets of numbers are comparable, one being framed as a door rating and the other as insulation for a garage, so treat the disagreement as unresolved rather than splitting it.

One caveat before you shop to a number. R-value shifts with the type, thickness and density of the material, so two products described the same way rarely test the same.

Per-inch performance, material by material

R-values vary with the type, thickness and density of the insulation material, so the same nominal product is not the same number. Nealon Insulation gives per-inch figures for the common garage options: closed-cell spray foam at about R-6.5 per inch, the highest per-inch figure on its list; rigid foam board at about R-4 to R-6.5 per inch; blown-in cellulose at about R-3.5 to R-4 per inch; and fiberglass batts at about R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch.

Stacking layers of insulation can raise the total R-value of an insulated area, and high R-value insulation generally costs more than low R-value insulation. No source here puts a dollar figure on the difference.

Each material has its own failure mode. Nealon notes that fiberglass batts lose R-value when compressed and air-seal poorly on their own, and that blown-in cellulose can settle over time if it isn't installed properly, costing performance. Cellulose is recycled paper treated for fire and pest resistance, and fills awkward gaps and irregular framing well.

Is a higher R-value garage door worth it? Three checks first

No source here explains how a door's advertised R-value is measured or by whom, whether it is a center-of-panel figure or a whole-door figure, or whether any standard or third party verifies it. What is on the record is that the number alone is not enough.

Garaga states plainly that a door's thermal resistance value means little without effective thermal breaks and suitable weatherstripping around and between the sections. Garaga's point implies the published number can overstate real performance, but no source here says by how much or how to tell.

Run these three checks before you pay for a higher figure:

  • Bottom seal condition. Garaga advises checking that the bottom weatherseal resists intense cold and that perimeter weatherstripping stays soft and flexible even at -15°F.

  • Perimeter weatherstripping. Garaga treats suitable weatherstripping around the sections as part of what makes a rating meaningful.

  • Gasketing between the door's own panel joints. Ask the fitter whether the weatherstripping between sections forms an effective thermal break; that is the term they use,

  • What the foam actually is. Polyurethane and polystyrene are the two common fills, and at equal thickness polystyrene insulates roughly half as well, so panel thickness alone tells you nothing.

Sealing is a separate job from insulating

No source here gives an installed cost, an energy saving or a payback period specific to a garage, so the return on stepping from one R-value to the next cannot be shown. Home Depot's claim that properly insulating a home can cut heating and cooling costs by up to 15% is a whole-home figure and cannot honestly be applied to a garage.

What the sources do say is that R-value is not the only spec that matters: a garage door has to be airtight as well as well insulated. Nealon Insulation makes the point that a door insulation kit does not seal air leaks at all, which is why the kit and the seal replacement are two jobs, not one. Five kits, cheapest first

Door kits cluster tightly. Nealon Insulation puts the whole category at R-4 to R-8. That absence matters if you are trying to match a target number, because an unstated R cannot be checked.

The evidence available here does not include product listings for any specific kit, so no dimensions, weights, stated R-values, reflectivity percentages or installation windows can be reported for individual products. What can be said is what Home Depot says about fitting a kit at all: it rates DIY garage door insulation a beginner job of 2-4 hours, advises cutting insulation pieces 1 to 2 inches longer than the measured panel, and says to tuck the insulation vinyl side out, with any reflective radiant barrier facing outward too. Note also that nothing in these sources states how much weight a kit adds to a door or whether the opener springs need rebalancing afterwards.

What breaks when a garage is insulated like a house

Moisture is named once in the sources and never explained: Nealon Insulation treats higher R-values and moisture resistance as non-negotiable in a cold climate such as Connecticut. Nothing in these pages covers vapour barriers, whether an unheated insulated garage risks condensation, or how that interacts with the choice of material. No page in this set reports what owners found went wrong after installing to a given R-value, which should be read as unresearched rather than as evidence that nothing goes wrong.

What is documented is narrower. Nealon Insulation notes that rigid foam board requires a thermal barrier such as drywall over it in areas adjacent to living space.

Nealon also points out that fiberglass batts lose R-value when compressed and air-seal poorly on their own, Home Depot warns that insulation, fiberglass especially, irritates skin and eyes, and advises wearing gloves and safety glasses.

Heating the garage changes the target

Once a garage is heated, the recommended figures rise. Garaga wants at least R-12 for an insulated garage heated to a thermostat setting of 46-50°F (8-10°C) and at least R-16 for a garage converted into a workshop or home gym; Home Depot puts heated garages at R-10 to R-13. Both are use-case guidance.

No source used here addresses whether local code imposes an insulation or fire-separation level on a garage attached to a dwelling, or at what point a building department treats a heated garage as conditioned space. That question is unresearched, and worth putting to your building department rather than to a product page. One further gap worth naming: none of these sources addresses whether sealing and insulating a garage that contains a running vehicle or fuel-burning equipment creates a ventilation or carbon-monoxide problem, even though several of them push airtightness.

So: match the assembly to how the garage is built and used, which is how Nealon Insulation frames it. Foam board or fiberglass batts for attached and unheated, spray foam or dense-pack cellulose where there is heat or a room above, blown-in cellulose for a detached workshop. Then add the door.

Garage Insulation R-Value: Three Targets to Know

For that detached-front bedroom over a two-car garage from the opening, Home Depot's floor figure is at least R-14, and the door is a separate purchase whose specifications you will need to check against the seller's listing rather than against anything asserted here. If you are sizing heat next, work out the garage heater BTU difference between insulated and uninsulated before you buy the heater. The order matters, because the heater you size for an uninsulated bay is the wrong heater for an insulated one.

The verdict
